This first module is one of three core modules included in all Principals as STEM Leaders (PASL) programs. It explores the nature of contemporary leadership and how it influences the way in which educational change should be led and supported.
Module 1 provides principals with the evidence-based professional learning support required to confidently and successfully lead the introduction and consolidation of the STEM project in their school's curriculum.
We recognise that each person who accesses this module brings with them a diversity of understandings and experiences of STEM and STEM education (both in terms of STEM practitioner practices and leadership of STEM initiatives and/or whole school approaches).
The design of all PASL modules respects and aims to accommodate this diversity by seeking to draw from the perspectives and experiences of others working their way through the materials.
We do not aim to ‘tell you how it is’, but to provoke thought and discussion. If you are leading others through the module, it is important to listen and respond to participants’ needs and interests as appropriate.
You will find a selection of supporting readings recommended throughout the module. These have been chosen for their relevance to the topic and because they are freely accessible through open access.
It is important that you read relevant documents as you progress through the module in order to understand their key points, before moving on to new ideas. We encourage you to explore other identified literature when time allows. Visit the resources section to view the list of resources referred to in this module.
Download the module onto your device and study, or lead the professional learning of your group, at your own pace.
Being able to practise transrelational leadership is not difficult and simply involves the four essential tasks displayed on this diagram.
To learn more about what is implied when completing these four essential tasks, we recommend you download the module materials.

The PASL Core Module 1 has been designed to provide principals with key information that can support and build on their strategic planning knowledge and capacity.
At various times in this first module, principals are urged to create a compelling vision statement for their STEM Project; the PASL Strategic Planning Framework (Branson, 2019), included in the module resources, offers guidance across all phases of the STEM Project lifecycle.
